Audience Questions and Answers

Speakers

Dr. Baumgaertel has lectured worldwide on various orthodontic topics including orthodontic mini-implants and cone beam tomography. He has published multiple scientific articles and acts as a reviewer for a number of high-profile journals (e.g. American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics). Additionally, he is author and co-editor of two textbooks. Dr. Baumgaertel is a Clinical Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he serves as Director of the subspecialty clinic for skeletal anchorage and instructor of the orthodontic biomechanics course. Dr. Baumgaertel also maintains an active private practice in the Longmont, CO area. In addition, he is a visiting Professor at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Petrey maintains an active clinical practice, Petrey & Newcomb Orthodontics, with his partner Dr. John Newcomb in Somerset, Corbin, and Hazard, KY. In addition to his patient care, he is a clinical researcher, lecturer, and author of numerous orthodontic related articles covering TADs, lingual orthodontics, treatment modalities including managing impacted canines, digital technologies in orthodontics, and practice promotion. Dr. Petrey received his Masters in Public Health, DMD, Masters in Science, and Orthodontic training from the University of Kentucky. His lectures and articles on TADs have focused on TAD insertion techniques, TAD design & TAD application in clinical practice in both traditional and non-traditional mechanics, as well as in the use of TADs for bone and space maintenance for patients with missing teeth. Through his research and clinical experience, Dr. Petrey has contributed to several TAD clinical reference guides, print articles, and in TAD and TAD appliance design and development. Dr. Petrey enjoys energetic and interactive lectures & discussions that further expand the armamentarium of the modern orthodontist.

TADs in Private Practice - What I’ve learned over the years.

TADs are great and make a lot of sense. We know they work. But what are the things you should know as a practice owner about using TADs on a daily basis in your private practice? Learn the integration of TADs in private practice, what cases they are most helpful for and how to explain TADs to your patients. This fast-paced lecture will get you excited for a weekend of learning and idea exchange.

Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication: reliable biomechanics with Dentaurum’s tomas Pin

There are many ways to make things complicated, but the beauty of tomas Pin biomechanics is that they can be extremely simple and yet effective. This makes them ideal for private practice. Dr. Baumgaertel has used the tomas Pin for at this point twenty years and will share how he likes to set up his cases with tomas to treat a wide variety of indications.

Clinical Cases treated with the tomas Pin - Part 1

In this segment of Dr. Baumgaertel’s lecture he will share cases treated over the years. You will see raging successes, humbling failures, and unusual cases that will expand your understanding of TAD supported orthodontic treatment.

Custom MARPEs with the tomas Eyelet

Learn everything you need to know to start using custom MARPEs with the tomas eyelet. This ever-evolving treatment method has become a cornerstone in Dr. Baumgaertel’s orthodontic practice. Correcting the transverse dimension without compromise, even in older patients, opens the door to awesome orthodontic treatment results, that were unachievable before.

Clinical Cases treated with the tomas Pin and Review - Part 2

In this continuation of Part 1 Dr. Baumgaertel will share more worthwhile clinical cases and review topics discussed this weekend.

Non-Traditional TADs! Uncommon TAD Techniques in Treating Challenging Cases Part 1 and Part 2.

This two-part lecture will delve into unconventional applications of TADs and TAD mechanics demonstrating treatments that would otherwise be unachievable without surgery or face significant clinical challenges. Both TAD treatments and TAD-supported appliances will be showcased in innovative treatment approaches, and “off-label” uses.

The lecture covers a range of topics, from simple sliding mechanics for both anterior and posterior tooth substitution to full arch substitution using TADS and TAD appliances to more complex mechanics with TADs and impacted teeth and Molar uprighting with retromolar TADs. Topics addressed include complexities such as poor bone locations and the distance of substitution. More challenging substitutions and anchorage requirements will be demonstrated using the AMDA (Advanced Molar Distalizing Appliance) in non-traditional ways to illustrate both posterior and anterior tooth protraction for substitution.

The AMDA mechanics for distalizing teeth in Class II cases and increasing arch length to create space in severely crowded arches will be demonstrated. While the benefits of molar distalization have been recognized in orthodontics for over a century, techniques like headgear have drawbacks for patients, and appliances like distal jets have inherent anchorage challenges. The TAD AMDA appliance offers a unique solution by allowing for distal translation of posterior teeth while maintaining “absolute anchorage.” AMDA cases will be presented, showcasing the resolution of crowding, Class II correction, en masse retraction, and bilateral and unilateral movements.

The lecture also explores the use of TAD mechanics to close Anterior Open Bites. The application of TADs for posterior intrusion in Anterior Open Bite correction will also be demonstrated. The use of TADs alone and in combination with TPAs and non-traditional expanders will be illustrated. The impact of posterior intrusion and vertical change on anterior-posterior relationships will be discussed. Additionally, a TAD-supported retention protocol for Anterior Open Bite corrections will be presented.

A unique skeletal-only MARPE technique will also be demonstrated with multiple case presentations. MARPE has gained popularity in TAD mechanics, with various systems and techniques emerging. This section of the presentation will focus on case selection and protocols for TAD-supported palatal expansion using skeletal-only MARPE design. Cases in adults with expansion that otherwise could only be achieved through surgical intervention will be showcased. The benefits of MARPE, which is not tooth-borne, will be discussed and demonstrated.

Non-traditional techniques of using TADs for pontic teeth as temporary tooth replacements in both congenitally missing and trauma-induced edentulous ridges in growing patients will be presented. The results of the evolution of TADs with pontic teeth over the past 18 years of placements will be presented. Both mechanical and digital techniques for pontic fabrication will be showcased. A digital technique for determining the ideal TAD placement for pontics will also be demonstrated. Additionally, new techniques, including abutment placement to facilitate easy replacement of pontic teeth without TAD removal, will be presented.
