Terrific TADs – Essentials for Excellence - Part 1
Dr. Sebastian Baumgaertel

Fundamentals for Successful TAD Use

In this segment you’ll learn the evidence-based building blocks for TAD success and how to implement them, explained from a clinician’s perspective.

My Favorite tomas® Biomechanics

Stable TADs call for smart biomechanics. In this segment you’ll learn some of Dr. Baumgaertel’s favorite set-ups to tackle various challenging clinical indications.

Unique TAD Mechanics: TAD Treatments Limited only by Biology, Physics, and Imagination - Part 1
Dr. Joseph S. Petrey

TAD Supported Distalization for Class II and Severe Crowding Correction

The use of TADs in molar distalization and the AMDA molar distalization appliance will be presented. This case base lecture will demonstrate protocols to treatment plan, place, and activation of the AMDA TAD Distalizer. Traditional uses for the AMDA distalizer in addition to non-traditional mechanics including mesialization and en mass retraction while using the same appliance will be demonstrated with case presentations. Following this lecture, participants will have a clear understanding of the AMDA appliance, appropriate case selection, AMDAs uses for distalization, mesializations, en mass retraction and non-traditional uses.

Open Bite Correction with TADs, treating Surgical Cases Non-Surgically

Anterior Open Bites are some of the most challenging cases to treat in orthodontics. Complexities from treatment mechanics to orthodontic relapse cause open bites to be difficult from treatment to retention. TAD mechanics to correct Anterior Open Bites with posterior intrusion will be presented. A full protocol for the use of TADs for molar intrusion to close open bites will be presented. Case selection criteria, insertion techniques, appropriate placement locations, and treatment mechanics will be demonstrated through the presentation of numerous cases. A comparison of TAD open bite closure and surgical correction including treatment success and orthodontic relapse differences between the two treatments will also be made.

Clinical Cases

In this third segment you’ll see how an orthodontic practice builds on the knowledge presented on Day 1. Discussions of various patients treated with the tomas® Pin will cover the whole range from success to failure.

tomas® Eyelet RPE

The tomas® Eyelet is a coupling device for the tomas® Pin with expansion screws resulting in Miniscrew Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) appliances of varying design that have been shown to produce skeletal expansion in adolescents and adults (non-surgical). In this fast-paced lecture segment Dr. Baumgaertel will explain the biomechanics of MARPE, teach you when to use which MARPE design, and will discuss cases, again covering the entire range from success to failure.

TADs & Pontics: Management Missing Teeth in the Growing Patient

Orthodontic treatment and retention for patients with missing teeth are some of the more complex modalities in orthodontics. This complexity is exacerbated when the missing tooth is in the anterior segment, & a greater challenge when treating a growing patient. Techniques for managing these cases in treatment & in retention will be presented. Case selection, appropriate TAD placement, crown fabrication & long-term management will be demonstrated. The management of bone and implant sites in growing patients as well as aspects such as growth changes & bone biology will be presented. Success rates from over a decade of TAD supported pontics will also be presented.

02:30 pm Coffee break
03:00 pm Roundtable Discussion
Dr. Sebastian Baumgaertel & Dr. Joseph S. Petrey
04:30 pm Conclusion of the 2021 TADCON

Speaker

Dr. Sebastian Baumgaertel
Cleveland, OH, USA

Dr. Baumgaertel has lectured worldwide on various orthodontic topics including orthodontic mini-implants and cone beam computed tomography. He has published multiple scientific articles and acts as a reviewer for a number of high-profile journals (e. g. American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics). Additionally, he is author and co-editor of two textbooks. Dr. Baumgaertel is a Clinical Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he serves as Director of the subspecialty clinic for skeletal anchorage and instructor of the orthodontic biomechanics course. Dr. Baumgaertel also maintains an active private practice in the Cleveland, OH area. In addition, he is a Visiting Professor at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Joseph S. Petrey
Somerset, KY

Dr. Petrey received his Masters in Public Health, D.M.D., and Orthodontic training from the University of Kentucky and maintains active private practices in Somerset, Corbin, and Hazard, KY. He has authored multiple articles on TAD insertion & application and has contributed to several TAD clinical reference guides. Dr. Petrey lectures nationally on optimal TAD insertion techniques for success, as well as innovative applications of TADs, and the use of TADs with lingual appliances as well as lectures on traditional orthodontic treatment, treatment planning, and general practice principles.

tomas®: One system, many possibilities.

The tomas® anchorage system is adapted to both pin versions. With tomas®-auxiliaries and tomas®-abutments, it offers many individual components to make different appliances for direct and indirect coupling.

1 – amda® invented by Prof. Papadopoulos, 2 – Double tube concept by Dr. Sohani

tomas®: The complete system for all indications

Skeletal anchorage – median, paramedian and interradicular.

Orthodontic treatment is easy and effective with the tomas® skeletal anchorage system. In almost all cases, using mini-pins eliminates the need for extra-oral equipment.

The main areas for treatment with mini pins are for example active tooth movements or passive stabilization. Extractions can almost always be avoided. tomas® users can benefit not only from the simple, but comprehensive portfolio with only a few components, but also from a large offer of services which greatly simplifies the application of the skeletal anchorage program.

Users have at their disposal a portfolio of instruments and accessories which have been especially coordinated for tomas®-pins. There are no limits to the possibilities for coupling tasks.

amda® - compliance-free treatment

The modern alternative to extractions in the case of class II anomalies.

Together with the tomas® system, amda® offers a safe system for the distalization of upper molars. As a skeletal anchorage device it can be used for the bi- or unilateral distalization or the mesialization of upper molars and for the retraction of the upper anterior teeth depending on how it is fitted. The appliance serves as a skeletally anchored transpalatal arch during the retention phase.

amda® is more than merely a distalization appliance. It is the modern alternative to extractions in the case of class II anomalies. The amda® appliance was invented by Prof. Dr. Moschos A. Papadopoulos and developed by Dentaurum in close cooperation.

Dr. Papadopoulos is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at the School of Dentistry, Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece.
